The Andrea Durbach Prize winner for 2021 has been announced as Keely Duggan and Dr Donna McNamara (University of Newcastle) for their article, 'The blurred distinction between therapeutic and non-therapeutic medical interventions for intersex children in Australia'.

The article explores the lack of consensus in the international community regarding the issues of intersex children and critiques Australia’s inaction on unnecessary medical interventions that reflect outdated gender essentialist attitudes.

The Andrea Durbach Prize was established in 2017 and is awarded annually to an author or authors whose original article in the Australian Journal of Human Rights reflects the values that have resonated in Professor Durbach’s career and scholarship. These include: the courage to push the boundaries of human rights debates; the creativity to examine issues that cut across different academic disciplines; and a desire to press for human rights accountability to ensure voices that aren’t always heard are magnified.

You can read the winning article in open access via Taylor & Francis until the end of January.
