Socio-environmental issues and COVID-19 pandemic: Advocacy for children's rights to education

The paper focused on present situation of mass schools’ closure as a way of controlling the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. It was argued that the school closure though not devoid of reasonable justifications, yet constitute an infringement on the rights to education as stipulated by both international law treaties as well as Nigerian constitution. On basis of existing tension inherent between protecting public health and the human rights, experts have always held the government responsible to proffer remedies and solutions where needed. In the face of unavailability of technologies and infrastructures, it remained important for government to devise a perfect strategy for schools to remain opened for academic activities. The work states among others the need for stakeholders in education system to adopt a palliative policy as against total or partial schools closures which have denied learners of their educational progression as well as constituting an infringement to children’s rights to education.
