Migrant workers and the COVID-19 crisis in Australia: an overview of governmental responses

The initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Australia’s workforce was mitigated by relief measures swiftly announced and implemented by the federal government. However, despite broad coverage for Australian citizens and permanent residents, these schemes were noteworthy for their general lack of protection for migrant workers and other temporary visa holders. State governments moved to address this gap to greater or lesser degrees. This contribution offers an overview of governmental responses and analyses the effect of the lack of federal support.
