Australian Human Rights Institute opens largest-ever round of human rights research grants

The Australian Human Rights Institute has opened its latest seed funding round, providing financial support to UNSW research projects that address and relate to human rights.

As well as grants of $10,000-$20,000 (available to Institute Associates across all faculties and schools), this year the Institute has partnered with the Digital Grid Futures Institute, Disability Innovation Institute, Institute for Climate Risk and Response, and the UNSW faculties of Engineering, Business, Law & Justice, and Medicine & Health to offer a suite of joint seed funding.

The Institute’s seed funding schemes have provided more than $350,000 across 31 projects since 2021, including research into air quality data in Pacific countries, the prevention of reincarceration of people with intellectual disability, access to dialysis for Aboriginal communities in remote Australia, support for women experiencing financial abuse, transgender rights in Indonesia, and forced labour and slavery in the fishing industry.

It’s easy for UNSW academics to become an Institute Associate, which provides access to these funding opportunities. The Associates Program brings together more than 270 academics and PhD students from across all UNSW faculties and partner institutions to help foster an interdisciplinary approach to research with a human rights focus.
